Monterrico Nature Reserve has been characterized as one of the tourist destinations most visited by both foreign and domestic tourists . However, in a year when the global economic crisis has affected different sectors of production, one of the hardest hit has been tourism, especially in the Pacific.
However, there have been alternatives that promote sustainable tourism development for Monterrico while economic and social benefits for communities the region.
In this framework, Monterrico Management Group is organizing the first Festival de la Tortuga, an event that not only gives boost to local tourism, but also to reposition the area as an ecological destination, creating awareness on the conservation and protection of Monterrico Nature Reserve and its species, including sea turtles, an icon of the area. The event with the support and enthusiasm of organizations such as CAMTUR, CAT, GREEN WAVE, INGUAT PRORURAL CECON and CONAP.
Turtle Festival 2009 will take place from 15 to 20 October in the entire coastal area of \u200b\u200bthe Monterrico Nature Reserve and will include various sports, cultural, educational and recreational activities specially geared towards the family and in which the public can have an active participation and experience about the life of turtles and learn about the wonderful species that holds the Monterrico Nature Reserve.
sports activities will include swimming tournaments, soccer and beach volleyball, exhibitions and skit boogey board surfing, stunt air show by professionals and supported by the Air Force of Guatemala. Within
cultural activities is the photo contest on the Reserve and its species, to be held with the support of Guatemala Photographic Club and will be as a display Standing at the Festival in several hotels. There will be many bands that enliven the festival evenings in hotels and in the Meeting Point, which is the Paseo de Don Pedro. Recreational activities have fashion shows with the presence of Miss Guatemala, Lourdes Figueroa, the coronation of Queen of the festival, sand sculpture contests, among others.
Daily guided tours are conducted by the Fed, wetlands and mangroves, night walks to spot turtles, talks with experts and screening of films and documentaries in the hotels. There will also be the known releases of turtles, but on Saturday 17 is carried out a massive release in different parts of the beach (from Candelaria to Hawaii), which aims to become a Guinness Record and thus achieve a unique position in the world both the Monterrico area and country.
